Stephanie Murray. Sjs165. Ryan Gunderson. May 1 2017. Call
Stephanie Murray SJS165 Ryan Gunderson May 1 2017 Call to Action on Food Insecurity A. Summary of Actions Food insecurity the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food, more than 800 million people live every day with hunger or food insecurity as their constant companion (Definitions of Food Security) . People who suffer from food insecurity often live in low income areas that lack grocery stores, farmer markets, or healthy food at a reasonable price called food deserts. So, the question is how can we address this issue. In order to get a better understanding of my chosen issue, and make others more aware of this matter, I partook in several events on campus. For example, On Aprilâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I chose my actions because each act applied to more than one of the groupings. CANstruction, the documentary, and petition can be grouped under options 1 and 2. CANstruction benefited our community while being something happening right here on campus. It was something easy to take part in and helped people right here. The documen tary was easy and quick to send to many with the click of a button, and by having people do it on their own time, I believe more watched it than if I hosted a watching event, and it was informing each recipient about what exactly food insecurity is . Then the petition was something quick I could sign digitally, but adding my name to the list would hopefully bring them closer to reaching their goal. The bake sale, and popsicle sale apply under groups 2 and 3. I love to bake and work at a bakery at home, so I was excited to help with the bake sale. Some people may say these two do not help the cause because it is junk food, but by making homemade goods and buying a good healthier option popsicle we were supplying students with healthier options than they would find on campus. I thought this goes hand in hand with food insecurity because those affected by it have access to food just not healthy or affordable options. And again, these activities were right here

The Library Of The Sabarmati Ashram - 1058 Words
While working in the archives of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, I came across a fascinating letter to MK Gandhi sent by 11 young women of Calcutta. The letter was undated, but it appeared to have been written in January, 1939. It was addressed to ââ¬Å"Most revered Mahatmajiâ⬠, and was signed individually by the 11 women, all Hindus by their names. The letter was written in protest against an essay written by Gandhi for his journal, Harijan. Gandhiââ¬â¢s article, said these women, was ââ¬Å"not very inspiringâ⬠, since it seemed to ââ¬Å"put the whole slur upon the injured female who suffers most due to the malevolent social customâ⬠. The letter (to whose arguments I shall presently return) intrigued me, so I set off to locate the original article by Gandhiâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Gratuitous attack In between acknowledging the problem and offering solutions, Gandhi spoilt his case by launching an unprovoked attack on the dress code of the modern woman. For all the evil that males did, he remarked, ââ¬Å"I have a fear that the modern girl loves to be Juliet to half a dozen Romeos. She loves adventure. My correspondent seems to represent the unusual type. The modern girl dresses not to protect herself from wind, rain and sun but to attract attention. She improves upon nature by painting herself and looking extraordinary. The non-violent way is not for such girls.â⬠It was to this gratuitous advice, this patriarchal preconception of how women must dress, that the young women of Bengal responded. ââ¬Å"Some may find modern girlsââ¬â¢ dresses and deportments a bit different than they wish them to be,â⬠said these women to Gandhi, ââ¬Å"but to brand them as exhibitionistic generally is a positive insult to her sex as a whole. Strength of character and chaste behaviour are necessary not only for modern girls but for men as well. There may be a few girls playing Juliets to a dozen Romeos. But such cases presuppose the existence of half a dozen Romeos, moving around the streets in quest of a Juliet, thereby pointing out where the proper correction lies.â⬠These 11 young women of Calcutta spiritedly defended the womanââ¬â¢s right toShow MoreRelatedSabarmati Ashram1471 Words à |à 6 PagesSabarmati Ashram is located in the Ahmedabad at the bank of River Sabarmati. Affirmative Action Essay With Bakker, Fisher, Grutter, Schuette, Example For Students
Affirmative Action Essay With Bakker, Fisher, Grutter, Schuette, Affirmative ActionAffirmative Action as defined by the Meriam Websters Dictionary is anactive effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of membersof minority groups or women. In 1961 John F.Kennedy issued an executive order calling for AffirmativeAction as a means to promote equal opportunity for racial minorities, in hiringby federal contractors. This was the first official use of the term by theFederal Government. Eight years later Nixon as President beefed up the Office ofFederal Compliance Programs, which along with the Equal Employment OpportunityCommission has become one of the governments two main enforcers of affirmativeaction policy.(Groliers Electronic Encyclopedia, 1993)Such efforts have vastly expanded opportunities for Afro-Americans. However they have also touched off complaints from many whites that Afro-Americans are benefiting from reverse discrimination. Under the equalopportunity act of 1972 most federal contractors, subcontractors, all state andgovernment institutions (including universities) must initiate plans to increasethe proportions of their female and minority employees until they are equal tothe proportions existing in the available labor market.(Groliers ElectricEncyclopedia, 1993)Affirmative action plans that establish racial quotas were declaredunconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the case of University of California VS. Bakke in 1978. This case arose when the medical school of the University ofCalifornia at Davis twice rejected Allen Bakkes application while admittingmembers of racial minorities who had lower test scores. Bakke charged that themedical schools policy of setting aside 16 of the 100 positions for racialminorities was a violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. In a complex 5-4 decision the Supreme Court ordered that Bakke be admitted. Thecourt ruled that even though universities may consider race and ethnic originsas a factor in evaluating candidates for admission, they may not establish fixedracial quotas.(Time Magazine, May 27 1991, pp.22)The decision was, however upheld in the case of Private Business andUnions in United Steelworkers of America vs. Webber in 1979. This case arosewhen Brian F. Webber sued Kaiser Aluminum and the United Steelworkers of Americafor setting aside half of the positions in a training program for minorityworkers with less seniority. The Supreme Court overruled this case by a 5-2 voteholding that the Kaiser program did not violate title VII of the civil rightsact of 1964. The ruling was that, private employers could voluntarily adoptplans designed to eliminate conspicuous racial imbalance in traditionallysegregated job categories. Then in 1984 and 1986 the justices ruled againstupsetting seniority systems in fav or of minorities.(Harpers Magazine, July 1991,pp.27)In 1984 the Supreme Court struck down a Richmond ordinance intended toquarntee Afro-Americans and other minorities a greater share of the citysconstruction contracts. The decision not only threatened similar programs in 36states, but also opened the door to legal attacks against other racially basedgovernment schemes. A key component of the court ruling was the requirement thatall government distinctions based on race be subject to strict scrutiny. Thismeans that public sector affirmative action programs are valid only if theyserve the compelling state interest of redressing identifieddiscrimination.(Time Magazine, February 6 1989, pp.60)Affirmative action has moved to the forefront of public debate in recentmonths with a proposed California ballot initiative that would end many race-based preference programs. The University of California itself has become thefocus of debate after Ward Connerly, a Regent for the University of Calif orniasystem called for an end to such preferences in admissions. The Chancellor ofUCLA Charles E. Young, quickly took a strong stand against Mr. Connerly, sayingthat affirmative action had benefited the university and shouldcontinue.(NY.Times, June 4 1995, pp.22)The University Of California at Berkeley campus was among the first ofthe nations leading universities to embrace the elements of affirmative actionin its admissions policies, and now boasts that it has one of the most diversecampuses in America, with whites accounting for only 32% of the student body. .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .postImageUrl , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:hover , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:visited , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:active { border:0!important; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:active , .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u206420cf473474a9f514f87bd39d6d2a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay On Alzheimer'S DiseaseHowever Berkeley may soon become one of the first campuses in the nation toabandon the cornerstone of affirmative action in higher education. The Liability Of A Car Accident Essay Example For Students
The Liability Of A Car Accident Essay On December 12th 2012, round 5.40pm, my client, Mrs J. Smith, was involved in a car accident, which has caused her to be off work since the accident due to a broken back and several major surgeries. The accident was caused by the negligence of your client, Mr J. Sherwood, who was reported, by Mrs Smith, to be driving while ââ¬Ëtexting on his phoneââ¬â¢, which led to him to crash into her car, as he did not spot at the red lights. In the previous letter I had sent, I stated what the liability requirement in the tort of negligence were, regarding this case. Now I am going to apply these criteria to the case in question. Firstly, there is evidence that the offender, Mr Sherwood, owed my client a duty of care, which he breached. The offender should have been driving reasonably, as he is an ordinary person doing a task, driving. The first part to check if a duty of care is owed is foreseeability, and it is clear that it was foreseeable that such accident would happen, as driving while using a hand-held phone would be classed as careless or dangerous driving, as the person capacity to drive would be lowered, due to them not being focused on the task, which in this case lead to a c car accident, and serious damage to a person, physical as well as mental, including the car itself. The second factor is proximity, which as previously explained means, how close or proximate was the event (timing), space and relationship . We will write a custom essay on The Liability Of A Car Accident specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There is no relationship between Mrs Smith and Mr Sherwood, as they were two ordinary people driving on a road. However, the act of crashing into Mrs Smithââ¬â¢s car was proximate in time and space, as it was immediate, as well as the damages of the event. This increases the fact that Mr Sherwood owes my client a duty of care and has b. .the costs of these have to be included, as well as prescriptions, physiotherapy etc. On the other hand, the non-pecuniary losses, focus on the loss of future earning, and are more elevated. First of all, the costs for the repairs of the car would be of roughly ?350. The fact that Mrs Smith has been off work for such a long period, about 6 months, and she is estimated to be off work for another 6, causes the amount of compensation amount to raise. My client earned ?20.000 a year, which is what sheââ¬â¢s going to lose. This added to the amount owed for the physical damages equals to ?74.000. My client is likely to recover from this accident, and will also be able to carry on her job as a teacher, meaning that are currently no other future losses which would be caused by this accident. Underneath I have included a screenshot of the website I used to come to this conclusion.
